PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE
Submitted by Melanie Cook

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, rocks about 2" in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The students laughed.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. "Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognise that this is your life.

The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health, your children - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else, the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinnerparty and fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

A Prayer...
by Evey

Hello,

I woke up today to hear the first of the string of tragedies that has fallen upon the United States. I must say that I am still in shock over this. I'm watching the news right now and shaking my head in disbelief over the in-your-face footage of the tragedies and pointing fingers as they try to figure out who is behind this so that they may have justice. Although I am not what you would term religious, I still feel that a small prayer and blessing is greatly needed:

God (or whoever/whatever is out there), please keep Your hands and eyes upon the world and please be with those who are in Your need during this tragic time. I pray for the survival and well-being of those who are injured. I pray for the well-being of the United States of America and the rest of the world.

I ask all of you to please sit back, close your eyes and take a moment to remember the thousands of people who have been killed or injured, as well as their family and friends. Send your love and goodwill out to them as they are badly in need of it...I know that they will receive your good blessings whethr you believe in this or not,

I wish there was more I could do right now, but I guess I'll just sit and watch the events unfold. If you feel the same way I do: sad, scared, restless, wishing you could help, please forward this to as many people as possible, and add to it as you feel necessary.

Sin has sought the same thing forever
To steal, to kill and to destroy
Jesus came that we might have life
and life more abundantly.

This is not a empty promise
but what there is, is "choice"
What do we choose
dictates what we win and what we lose

What more do we need to see, feel, hurt, die
to know that the wages of sin is death?
How much more do we need to have stolen from us
before we will seek His face?
How many more tears
before we take the path that is
the way, the truth and the life?

We wait for Him to do
but He has done it all.
The path is there and the path is good
walk it and you will not walk alone.

What a Mystery
The sun peeks up at the break of dawn
In response to the Master's command
The birds rejoice for a brand new day
As the darkness slowly slips away.

What awe and obedience displayed
As a symbol of their thankfulness,
The trees await the entrance of spring
To express their thanks unto the king.

Who can understand His love
Who can visualize the end
Who can unfold this mystery
Of a friend becoming a friend?

Yes, the wonders of this world may live
Deep in the heart of the mortal man.
Winter leaves behind mixed memories
Trademarks of time and eternity.

Who can understand His love
And who can foresee the end
Just who can solve this mystery
Of a friend becoming a friend?
Only one God, yes,
Only one God, eternal God.

Come over here, babe
It ain't that bad
I don't claim to understand
The troubles that you've had
But the dogs you say they fed you to
Lay their muzzles in your lap
And the lions that they led you to
Lie down and take a nap
The ones you fear are wind and air
And I love you without measure
It seems we can be happy now
Be it better late than never

Storm Warning

I watched the lightning from
my bedroom window,
like an inmate.
It reminded me of how I used
to be.
So unaware and content.
I think it talked.
I floated through it and

Or is it a transformation?
Then I heard the thunder
and thought, how far can it
possibly be?
Happiness is right above our

realize it.

STREETLIGHT
Under the Spotlight I'm not hard to miss.

My intuitions, preconceived notions and
Prejudices are all around me like little puddles.
Each puddle a different colour, firs
There's blue, then hot pink, and grey.
With a quiet eye the moon showers us.
Washes away the events of the day.

With only three fingers it prepares us.
The ways and places our adventures of tomorrow will need.

I wonder why the clouds part, or why we stand.
Maybe it's the same as the door slamming shut.
Like DI rattling inside my head,
Rolling and rolling looking for combinations and compliments.

HOLLYWOOD SYNDROME
I guess I'm just another hung up straight,
Going to bed at ten so I can get up at eight.
With which mind does it all begin?
I know it's not easy, breaking out of a conformists mould.
Having the freedom to think without any external, or worse,
Internal obstacles is impossible.
I finally see, just a hint, of what is to come.
I am perched on the edge,
Wide-eyed and completely encompassed by the opportunity
That awaits and rewards visionaries.
Not to waste time in this idle void.
A lifetime to make one step forward.
To come from nowhere with more drive and momentum
Inspiring our journey to the stars.

ONE DAY
The house is fine while I talk here in my sleep.
The bar is on the beach,
I'm taking each day one margarita at a time.
Opportunity walks by me every minute,
Hard to give it all up, just so I could get into it.
Having it all stand still in my head.
She could see I was frozen, she smiled and that was it.

BEAUTY JUST RADIATES
Like an ocean pearl, so flawless and complete.
A natural beauty,
A treasure to the wanderer who stumbles upon it,
And wishes to be all it is.
Unique, rare, and inspirational.
All these are in beauty.
Being admired for not doing,
Just being.

LANGUAGE
Language is tyrannical.
I think it was placed on us as a curse.
The more misinformation you read,
The more literate you are,
And still there are times when words
Cannot communicate meaning.
It's not what you say; it's how you say it.
The expression in the voice, the movement in
the meaning's body.
Having the scope to bring in humanity
through meaning.

NEW WAY
Journey against the grain,
Celebrating a thousand years.
To take this selfish understanding outside.
To denounce stereotypes and abort structure,
Creating symbolism.
To encapsulate the better parts and swallow it with water.
To improve your intangible standard of living.
Sitting transfixed watching the world go on without you.

OPEN WINDOW
I'm feeling things and it's so cold
Why won't the sun shine through this open window?
Is it better to sacrifice or is it better to let the wind blow?
So easy to let go, hangin' out this open window

PROPHETS/PROFITS
Starving artists are prophets selling their souls,
Don't believe in these hearts of gold,
They're so full of themselves, their lives are the only ones told.
Our cities are burning down,
I'm on my knees; we are the ones that are broken.
It wasn't that far but it was too long ago,
They took it all.
The only control we know.

BED OF LIFE
by Writer Unknown

The day will come when my body will lie upon a white sheet neatly tucked
under four corners of a hospital mattress located in a hospital busily
occupied with the living and the dying. At a certain moment a doctor will
determine that my brain has ceased to function and that, for all practical
purposes, my life has stopped.

When that happens, do not attempt to instill artificial life into my body by
the use of a machine. And don't call this my deathbed. Let it be called the
Bed of Life, and let my body be taken from it to help others lead fuller
lives.

Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face of love
in the eyes of a woman. Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused
nothing but endless days of pain. Give my blood to a teenager who was pulled
from the wreakage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren
play. Give my kidneys to one who depends on a machine to exist from week to
week. Take my bones, every nerve and muscle in my body and find a way to
make a crippled child walk.

Explore every corner of my brain. Take my cells, if necessary, and let them
grow so that someday, a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and
a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against the window.

Burn what is left of me and scatter my ashes to the winds to help the
flowers grow.

If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weaknesses and all
prejudice against my fellow man.

Give my sins to the devil; give my soul to God. If, by chance, you wish to
remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you
do all I have asked, I will live forever.

ATTITUDE

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for the day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes."

THE ULTIMATE SUCCESS FORMULA

All people who succeed consciously or unconsciously utilize the same formula for success. Use these four simple steps to achieve whatever you desire.

1) Decide what you want. (Be precise! Clarity is power.)
2) Take Action (because desire is not enough.)
3) Notice what's working or not. (You don't want to continue to expend energy on an approach that's worthless.)
4) Change your approach until you achieve what you want. (Flexibility gives you the power to create a new approach and a new result.)

I could not see for the fog in my eyes
I could not feel for the fear in my eyes
and from across the great divide
In the distance I saw a light

Tomorrow is a mystery

That's why it's called the PRESENT

The candles are lit. The curtains are drown
There's still no sign of rain nor down.

But the ghosts that haunt me won't leave my mind.

All the jackoffs at the office
the Rapist in the pool
Oh and the tragedies in the nurseries
little kids packin' guns to school
The ulcerated ozone
These tumors of the skin
This hostile sunbeatin' down on
This massive mess we're in!
And the gas leaks,
And the oil spills,
And sex sells everything,
And sex kills.
Sex kills...
Joni Mitchell

I Want to Crash a Car:
By: Dave Pura

What do you want to do before you die?

I want to save somebody's life and not be a hero,
I want to influence the president to change the world,
I want to be on top after hitting rock bottom.

I want to win a war after losing a friend,
I want to write a song that is desperately depended on,
I want to eat my own brain and learn that it is toxic.

I want to take the road less traveled,
I want to break down barriers and learn to fly,
I want to meet an alien,
I want to paint a picture, commit the crime, burn out and forget about time.

Before I die I want to disappear into oblivion and not come back.
What do you want to do before you die?
I want you to think about this because nothing else matters........

I want to crash a car.

I bet you are flying inside
E

I Scare myself and I don't mean lightly
I Scare myself, it can get frightening
I Scare myself to think want I could do
I Scare myself it's some kind of voodoo
and with that voodoo
I keep thinking of you
and with that voodoo
What can I do?
Dan Hicks

Let me love you true, let me rescue you
Let me lead you to where two roads meet
O come back above
where there's only love
and the ground beneath her feet
Salman Rushdie

....these are the killing fields my friends, where
truth relies on fame. And fame relies on truth it's
the fuel that feeds the flame. you ripped apart my
soul though you left me in your mind. Together we
will walk...

into the killing fields again
Rob Palacol

Tie a yellow ribbon round your heart
counted every moment we're apart
it's been five long year's
since you've been here
tie a yellow ribbon
Julia Fordham

Many people reach a crossroads in life. The
experience may be very painful but at the end of
it all a better person will emerge. Just remember
that you're in control of your own destiny
Gene McCrea

You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
you ask me to enter
but then you make me crawl
and I can't beholding on
to what you got
when all you got is hurt
Paul Hewson

You and I won't lose our head's
the way some lovers do
saying "This will last forever"
when it's just a year or two
you and I won't be the fool's
that other lovers are
thinking every silver bottle top
potentially a star still
Paddy McAloon

When love breaks down
the lies we tell
they only serve
to fool ourselves
when love breaks down
the things you do
to stop the truth
from hurting you
Paddy McAloon

Give me back my broken night
my secret room, my secret life
it's lonely here,
there's no one left to tortune
Give me absolute control
over every living soul
and lie beside me, baby
That' an order!
Leonard Cohen

Makes you feel much older
sublime the blind parade

It wrecks me how they justify their acts of war
they assemble, they prey
take good care of what the priests say
"after death it's so much fun"
Little sheep don't let your feet stray
M Hollis
